MCP
Memseek exposes an MCP interface only when a package explicitly declares one. This keeps an agent's tool surface small and reviewable: a view, artifact, or HTTP route does not become an MCP tool merely because it exists.
An MCP interface is an agent-facing allowlist, not a second catalog or a shortcut around workspace access. Read MCP interface for the terminology, and Packages first if the package/catalog relationship is new to you.
The package chooses one versioned interface. The API publishes it through
authenticated GET /tools and serves it directly to remote MCP clients at
POST /mcp. The memseek mcp command remains available as a local stdio
adapter:

The bridge never reads local catalog YAML and never follows an arbitrary URL from a client. The authenticated workspace API remains responsible for catalog selection, validation, and execution.

MCP by itself exposes explicit tools; it does not run at session or prompt lifecycle boundaries. The Claude Code plugin combines this curated MCP surface with hooks for automatic bounded recall, conversation capture, offline retry, and pre-compaction anchoring. Protocol support¶
Memseek uses the official MCP Python SDK
2.x and targets the current
2026-07-28 MCP revision.
Both transports also serve every earlier revision supported by the SDK,
including 2025-11-25, so clients still using the initialization handshake can
connect to the same endpoint or command.
The SDK owns protocol negotiation and wire bookkeeping. In particular, it
provides server/discover, the per-request protocol/capability metadata and
resultType fields required by 2026-07-28, while retaining the legacy
initialize flow. Memseek's tool layer adds the application contract:
tools/listreturns the current package allowlist in declared order, with JSON Schema 2020-12 input and output schemas, titles, descriptions, and safety annotations.tools/callreturns both JSON text andstructuredContent; the duplicate text representation keeps older clients interoperable.- Expected HTTP or validation failures are MCP tool results with
isError: true, so the model can correct a call. Protocol or transport failures remain protocol errors. - Every tool is annotated non-destructive and closed-world. All kinds except
ingestare read-only;ingestappends and is annotated as a write, so a host that gates writes can prompt for it. Deterministic reads are idempotent;answeris not marked idempotent because its model-backed wording may vary, andingestis not because replay-safety depends on a caller-supplieddedupe_key. - The server does not use sampling, roots, MCP logging, or server-initiated
requests. Those capabilities are unnecessary for this bridge and are
deprecated in the
2026-07-28revision.
For Streamable HTTP, every current-protocol request is an independent POST.
The SDK validates MCP-Protocol-Version, Mcp-Method, Mcp-Name, and any
schema-declared Mcp-Param-* headers against the JSON-RPC body. It returns JSON
for ordinary calls and can use a request-scoped SSE response for a long-running
call. There is no current-protocol session ID, GET event stream, or standalone
SSE endpoint.
Do not confuse the MCP wire revision with the "protocol": "memseek.mcp/v1"
member of GET /tools. The latter versions Memseek's authenticated discovery
envelope; it is not the negotiated MCP protocol version.
1. Declare the interface¶
First include the exact targets and MCP interface in the package manifest:

The interface supports five deliberately narrow kinds:

Views and artifacts remain the source of truth for tool parameters. Their parameter types, descriptions, enums, and bounds are compiled into the MCP JSON Schema, so do not duplicate parameters in the MCP file. The package compiler rejects a view or artifact target that is not also listed in the package. See Packages for the complete definition contract.
2. Inspect what an agent can use¶
After publishing the package to a workspace, inspect its actual tool surface with that workspace's bearer key:

The response contains the protocol, catalog/package/interface hashes, and
only the declared tools. Each tool includes its exact binding plus Draft
2020-12 input_schema and output_schema values; an agent client can build
its form, function call, and structured-result validator from this payload
rather than parsing YAML.

An empty tools array is expected when the selected package has no mcp:
binding. It does not mean every catalog definition was made available by
default.

ingest is the only kind that writes, and it is append-only. The destination
collection is named by the declaration, not by the caller: a collection sent
in the arguments is discarded before the request is built, so a tool can only
ever land a record in the drawer its package opened. The fields that establish
trust rather than content — derived_from, scores, annotations, status
and tombstone — are absent from its input schema, so an agent may add
evidence but never forge provenance, pre-score its own writes, publish drafts,
or retract anything. content carries the collection's own declared schema, so
a bad write is refused at ingest rather than stored.
It is annotated readOnlyHint: false, destructiveHint: false, and
idempotentHint: false — replay-safety depends on the caller passing a
dedupe_key, which makes a repeated call a no-op that returns the original id.
Hosts that prompt before a write will prompt for it.

The selected package is resolved per workspace: GET /tools reflects the
package most recently published into the authenticated workspace. A workspace
that has published nothing has no tools at all — and, on a service with no
catalog configured of its own, no catalog either, so the call returns 409
no_catalog rather than definitions it never asked for. Publishing a different
package changes the tool surface the next call returns. A bearer key authenticates exactly one
workspace, so the key you inspect here must be the key your agent later uses —
two keys are two workspaces with independent catalogs and data.
3. Serve remote MCP over HTTP¶
The normal Memseek API process now owns the MCP endpoint; there is no second daemon to launch. Start the API as usual:

--check authenticates to GET /tools without opening an MCP connection and
prints the selected package/interface, tool names, supported revisions, the
stdio command, and the Streamable HTTP URL. The remote endpoint is the API URL
plus /mcp:
Every HTTP request must use Authorization: Bearer <workspace API key>. Memseek
does not currently expose an MCP OAuth authorization server: configure the
workspace key as a static bearer token in the client. The key is resolved by
the same hash-only authentication path as the REST API and selects exactly one
workspace. Tool discovery and every call then refresh the workspace's package
allowlist and invoke only the existing exact view, artifact, answer, or record
route. MCP answer always forces save: false.
For an Internet-facing deployment:
- Terminate TLS at the service or a trusted reverse proxy and publish only the
https://.../mcpURL. Never send a workspace key over plaintext Internet HTTP. - Forward
Authorization,MCP-Protocol-Version,Mcp-Method,Mcp-Name,Mcp-Param-*,Accept, andContent-Typeunchanged. Do not cache MCP POST responses. - Allow at least 180 seconds for upstream response and idle timeouts. A slow
answercall may switch to request-scoped SSE; disable proxy response buffering and compression that coalesces SSE frames. - Memseek validates every present
Originheader. CLI clients normally omit it. Browser origins must be explicitly listed inAPI_CORS_ORIGINS; an unlisted origin receives403. - The current protocol is stateless, so
/mcpcan sit behind an ordinary round-robin load balancer. No sticky session or shared MCP session store is required.
4. Connect Claude Code over HTTP¶
HTTP is Claude Code's recommended transport for a remote server. Add Memseek at local scope so the expanded bearer token stays in your user configuration:

The name and the URL are positional, so they follow the transport and scope
flags; --header may be repeated and goes after them. In a Claude Code
session, run /mcp to see connection state and exposed tool count. Use claude
mcp list to inspect all configured servers and claude mcp remove memseek to
remove this one.

Claude Code asks before trusting a project-scoped server. The 180-second
timeout accommodates the bounded model-backed answer budget; deterministic
view, record, and artifact calls normally finish much sooner. See the official

5. Connect Codex over HTTP¶
The ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI, and Codex IDE extension share MCP
configuration. Export the key before starting Codex, then add this to
~/.codex/config.toml or a trusted repository's .codex/config.toml:

bearer_token_env_var names the environment variable; it does not write the
secret into TOML. The equivalent CLI setup is:

In the Codex TUI, use /mcp to inspect the live connection. The writes
policy uses Memseek's MCP annotations: current read-only tools do not prompt,
while a future tool not marked read-only would. See OpenAI's official Codex

6. Local stdio fallback¶
Use stdio when the MCP host and Memseek checkout are on the same machine or when a host cannot configure HTTP headers. Preflight as above, then configure the installed command:

From a checkout, replace memseek mcp with uv run --project
/absolute/path/to/memseek memseek mcp. The stdio process reserves stdout for
MCP messages; diagnostics must go to stderr.
7. Other hosts and compatibility¶

Do not configure the deprecated HTTP+SSE transport or a separate /sse URL.
The single /mcp endpoint handles current stateless requests and the older
Streamable HTTP handshake revisions supported by MCP SDK 2.x.
examples/pydantic_ai_mcp_showcase.py demonstrates stdio compatibility with a
client whose current FastMCP dependency is still on MCP SDK 1.x. It runs that
client in an isolated environment and starts Memseek's SDK 2.x command from the
project environment:

8. Match the client to the workspace that holds the data¶
An MCP tool call resolves against the single workspace its bearer key authenticates, and returns only what that workspace contains. When an agent "finds nothing", the usual cause is not a missing tool but a workspace mismatch: the records were ingested, or the package was published, under a different key than the one the client presents.
- Use one key for both sides. Publish the package and ingest the records
with the same
MEMSEEK_API_KEYthe MCP client (or host configuration) will use. A disposable workspace created for a one-off seeding run cannot be reached again unless its key was captured; mint a reusable one withmemseek create-workspace <name>and reuse that key everywhere. - Confirm the package before debugging tools. The
packagefield inGET /tools(rendered as the allowlist header in the Pydantic AI example) names the workspace's selected package. If it is not the package that owns your data, the key points at the wrong workspace — fix the key rather than the tools. answerexecutes on the server;viewandartifacttools do not need a model. Theanswertool synthesizes with the server's configured provider, so an API and worker without provider credentials cannot answer even when the memory is present. Named-view search and artifact renders are deterministic and remain available underLLM_FAKE=1, so prefer a search tool to confirm that the data is reachable independently of provider configuration.
Runtime and security guarantees¶
- One credential, one workspace. Each HTTP request is authenticated before MCP parsing; each stdio process receives one workspace key. Every discovery and call uses that resolved workspace, and tool arguments cannot select a different one. One HTTP API process can safely serve many workspaces.
- The API remains authoritative. Exact route bindings come from authenticated discovery. The bridge never executes an endpoint supplied by a client and never loads local catalog YAML.
- Calls reauthorize against current discovery. Removing a tool from the selected package immediately prevents subsequent calls even if a host cached its earlier tool list. Hosts may need a reconnect or manual refresh before a newly added tool becomes visible.
- Credentials stay below MCP. HTTP authentication is the
Authorizationheader; stdio authentication is process environment. The bearer key is never returned as MCP content or metadata and normal logging redacts authorization fields. - Content is untrusted. Tool descriptions and interface instructions tell the host that retrieved records are data, not instructions. This is a prompt injection boundary, not a substitute for host-side tool approval.
- Results are bounded by the API. View/artifact budgets and API response limits apply before content reaches MCP. Avoid raising client output limits until the underlying view is intentionally bounded.

Evolving an interface¶
Treat the MCP file as a public contract. Adding, removing, retargeting, or
changing the parameter contract of a tool requires a new MCP interface version
and a corresponding package version. The hashes returned by /tools let a
client record exactly which interface and definitions were used for a call.
Retrieved record content is data, not instructions. Preserve the interface's
instructions, keep tool descriptions narrow, and have your agent treat
returned content as untrusted reference material.
When changing either transport, run the protocol-level tests. They connect the
official SDK 2.x client in memory and through the HTTP ASGI boundary, assert
modern and legacy negotiation, exercise tools/list and tools/call, validate
authentication, Origin handling, structured output, and tool error semantics:
