Artifacts

An artifact is a saved recipe for assembling text out of memory. Where a view answers one search, an artifact composes several data sources — the current profile here, relevant evidence there — into one bounded, ready-to-use output such as a system prompt, a briefing document, or a skill description.

The point of defining this in YAML instead of application code is accountability: every render records exactly which records went in, under which definitions, and what came out. If a prompt misbehaved on Tuesday, you can see precisely what it contained on Tuesday.

Artifact files live in artifacts/*.yaml. A file starts with an artifacts: list and may contain several artifacts.

An artifact is the recipe; a render is one result; an artifact use is a handle for connecting that result to a later outcome. Those terms are defined together in the Glossary.

Start by describing the document you want

"Before replying to a customer, I want a briefing: first their current profile, then the past events most relevant to what I'm about to do. Keep the profile part under ~2,000 tokens and the evidence under ~3,000. If there's no evidence, fail — don't send an empty briefing."

Artifact fields

  • name, version, active — the same versioned identity as collections and views: public name, positive integer version, one active version per name (active defaults to false).
  • kind (required) — what the artifact is: prompt, skill, profile, or policy. For live artifacts this is descriptive labeling; for reviewed artifacts it also names the record type of the candidate state.
  • lifecycle (required) — live or reviewed. See Live vs. reviewed — this is the field to get right first.
  • parameters — the caller's typed inputs, using exactly the same model as view parameters: type is string, string_array, number, integer, boolean, or timezone-aware datetime, plus optional required, default, description, and type-appropriate constraints. See Parameter fields for the complete vocabulary.
  • blocks (required, at least one) — the named data sources. See Blocks.
  • template (required) — the final composition, and the whole of it. It may reference parameters ({{task}}) and block names ({{profile}}); every block you define must be used in the template, and unknown references fail catalog validation. See The template is the whole prompt.
  • snapshot (optional) — store each render as a record. See Snapshots.
  • learning (optional) — which block's maintained value should improve when feedback about a render arrives. See Declaring a learning target.
  • candidate_processor, complete_keys — reviewed-lifecycle only; see below.

Blocks

Each block is one data source with its own token budget. A block must choose exactly one of two sources:

A document block pulls the current records for one entity from one or more collections — no query, just "everything that's currently there":

You need a document block for state you want complete, not searched — a profile should always show all its keys, not the 10 most relevant ones. A document block cannot take args.

A view block runs a saved view with arguments:

You need a view block when relevance matters — "the events that matter for this task" rather than "all events". The args are type-checked against the view's declared parameters at catalog load: unknown args, missing required parameters, or mismatched types are compile errors.

Options on every block:

  • max_tokens (required, positive) — the block's slice of the output budget; content beyond it is truncated (and the truncation is recorded in the render manifest). The sum across all blocks may not exceed the deployment render budget (50,000 tokens by default).
  • required (default true) — what happens if the source produces nothing. true fails the whole render; false renders the artifact with the block empty. Mark a block optional when the document is still useful without it (e.g. "recent outcomes, if any").

The template is the whole prompt

A render is your template with escaped values substituted into it. Nothing else. The renderer adds no element, no attribute, and no explanatory sentence, so what you read in the YAML is what the model reads — you can diff a render against its template and find only your own words.

What the renderer does guarantee is escaping. Every block row and every parameter value has &, <, and > rewritten to the literal text \u0026, \u003c, and \u003e before substitution, so record text can never close or forge an element. That is unconditional and not configurable; it is what makes the element you write around a block trustworthy:

A block reference expands to its escaped rows, one per line. Wrap it, label it, or interleave it with your own instructions as the prompt requires — and pick the tag and wording that suit your model. A parameter reference expands to one escaped value, so wrap those you want marked too:

max_tokens bounds a block's rows alone. Any element you write is an ordinary template literal, counted with the rest of the template against the deployment render budget.

Not every artifact wants a fence. A lifecycle: reviewed artifact usually renders a value — a skill body, a candidate profile — that a human reviews or that a larger prompt later embeds. Marking it untrusted at this level would put a stray element in the middle of that outer prompt, so leave it bare and let the artifact that composes it decide.

Live vs. reviewed

lifecycle: live renders directly from current state, every time. Use it for prompts and briefings where "whatever is true right now" is exactly what you want. Live artifacts must not declare candidate_processor or complete_keys.

lifecycle: reviewed is for generated content that should be proposed, inspected, and explicitly promoted before it becomes current — the human-in-the-loop pattern. You need it when a wrong render has consequences: an agent skill that changes behavior, a policy document, a customer-facing profile.

  • candidate_processor (required for reviewed) — the derivation that proposes candidates. The compiler checks its emit boundary declares complete: true and review: required, that its keys equal complete_keys, and that it targets a collection this artifact reads with the artifact's kind as record type.
  • complete_keys (required for reviewed, non-empty, unique) — the keyed sections that must all be present before a candidate counts as complete.

Approval is always an explicit action. Rendering a proposal never silently makes it the current version. The runtime records the complete emitted proposal and a record of what was live at the time. Approval checks that receipt and fails atomically with 409 promotion_stale if live state changed after candidate generation. The artifact definition is not modified; the draft records are copied into new active successors.

Artifacts remain consumers and lifecycle declarations. Approval activates the exact complete draft emitted by the linked derivation. See Derivation execution and promotion.

Snapshots

Without snapshot, a render returns its result and a manifest, and that is all. With snapshot, each render is also written back into a keyed collection as a normal record — searchable, citable, and part of history:

You need a snapshot when other parts of the system should be able to answer "what prompt did the agent actually get?" — debugging, evaluation, and audit flows. entity may be omitted only when the artifact has an entity parameter to fall back on.

Declaring a learning target

A prompt usually carries several maintained values at once — a policy, a skill, a profile, retrieved history. When someone reports that an answer was wrong, which of them should improve? The client cannot reasonably answer that, and it should not have to know the artifact's internal structure. So the artifact says it:

  • target_block (required) — a block declared by this artifact. It must be a document block reading status: active and marked required: true. A view block is rejected: a ranked selection is not a promotable unit, so it cannot identify a base version.
  • artifact (required) — an exact name@version reference to an artifact with lifecycle: reviewed that maintains the target block's collections. Only a reviewed artifact has the draft/promote/rollback lifecycle a candidate needs. A package that ships this artifact must ship that one too.

Rendering this artifact through an artifact use resolves the declaration to the exact keyed heads that were in force plus the run that promoted them, so a later candidate replaces the version that actually influenced the run rather than whatever is active when the feedback arrives. If the target block read no active head, the use resolves to no target rather than to an empty one — a signal is never attributed to a version that was never used.

learning is optional and independent of lifecycle: a live prompt is the normal place to declare one, because the prompt is what gets used while the reviewed artifact is what gets improved. See Artifact uses & feedback for the resolved shape, the feedback contract, and retention.

What a render records

Every render response (and stored manifest) includes the exact input record ids, the definition and package hashes in effect, freshness information, what was truncated, and a stable hash of the rendered content. Global deployment bounds (MAX_ARTIFACT_RENDER_TOKENS, default 50,000 tokens, and MAX_ARTIFACT_INPUT_RECORDS, default 255 records) cap every render regardless of block budgets.
