HTTP API guide
Use this guide when your application calls Memseek directly over HTTP. It is organized in the order a typical integration happens: connect to a workspace, publish a catalog, write records, wait for automated work, read memory, and then operate or evolve the system.
Before you begin, read Getting started to run the service and Core concepts to understand the data model. The Glossary defines terms used in response fields, including entity, ready, current, derivation, and artifact use.
Connect to a workspace¶
All paths below are relative to your Memseek server, for example
http://127.0.0.1:8000. GET /health is the only public endpoint. Every
other endpoint requires the bearer token for the workspace that owns the
catalog and records:

A workspace key is both an identity boundary and a data boundary: publishing with one key and querying with another accesses two independent workspaces. Never put the key in browser code or a committed file.
Requests and responses use JSON unless an endpoint takes query parameters.
Successful writes may be asynchronous: a job_id means the request queued
work for the worker; poll GET /jobs/{id} rather than assuming derived data is
already available. Error responses use an HTTP status plus a stable error
code and a human-readable detail, for example:

The sections below cover every public endpoint, including operational and advanced routes. The Python SDK exposes the same capabilities with async Python methods.
A running example: Maria's profile¶
When an application asks for an entity's memory, three read endpoints answer
different questions. Use one example entity, maria, to keep the distinction
clear:

The same records appear differently depending on whether you want a stream, current state, or one key's audit history.
The application first writes evidence. It does not edit profiles/role when
Maria's role changes:

The response gives the inserted record UUID. Call it E1 below. Required
processors may initially leave it ready: false; the worker enriches the row
before it becomes search- and trigger-visible.
Later, a profile derivation reads E1 and writes a keyed profiles/role row
(P1). When new evidence E2 says Maria now leads platform architecture, the
next derivation run writes P2 for the same (entity, collection, key).
P2 is a successor, not an update to P1; both records remain in
storage. If an open thread is resolved, a tombstone T1 becomes the current
row for profiles/open_threads and tells readers to remove that key.

seq is the workspace's ingestion order, while occurred_at is the domain
time supplied by the caller. They can differ when evidence arrives late.
The three entity reads¶
GET /timeline — what happened, newest first¶
Use the timeline for an activity stream, debugging, or a compact replay of an
entity's records. It returns event records and keyed records together, does
not collapse successor versions, and excludes _system records by default.
Rows are compact: content is represented by a bounded text field rather than
the record's full content object.

For another page, pass the previous next_before_seq as before_seq. Useful
filters include collections, types, status=active|draft|all, and
include_system=true. limit is between 1 and 100.
GET /document — what is current now¶
Use the document for an agent or application that needs current keyed state,
not the event stream. For each (collection, key) pair it selects the newest
row for the requested status. With the example above, profiles/role resolves
to sequence 44; sequence 42 is not returned. A current tombstone appears under
retractions so a client can remove the key from its own cache.

freshness reports read-triggered derivations that feed the entity, including
their watermark, dirty/unready state, and queued or running job. The document
is never silently partial: if it exceeds the configured record or response
bound, the API returns 409 document_too_large; narrow it with
collections. status accepts active or draft.
GET /document/history — how one key changed¶
Use history when you need an audit trail for one collection-scoped key. It
returns every version, newest first: active successors, drafts, and tombstones.
For the example, history for profiles/role returns sequences 44 and 42.

History requires entity, collection, and key. It supports limit from
1 to 100 and the same before_seq continuation pattern as the timeline.
Complete endpoint reference¶
The endpoints below follow the lifecycle of a workspace:

Service and workspace catalog¶
GET /health is a liveness check for the API's database connection. It returns
{"ok":true,"db":true} when SELECT 1 succeeds and HTTP 503 otherwise. It
does not prove that a workspace key or catalog is valid.
GET /catalog returns the authenticated workspace's selected package metadata:
POST /catalog atomically installs a package for that workspace. The request
names an exact package version and supplies a path-to-YAML map; all files are
compiled as one graph before the workspace switches:

The response includes workspace, the selected package name/version,
catalog_hash, normalized uploaded files, loaded: true, and
rewritten_records — the number of stored records whose contract hash moved
forward because the change was provably additive. An invalid definition or an
incompatible replacement leaves the previous catalog active. See
Catalog layout for the YAML graph itself.
POST /catalog?dry_run=true compiles and plans exactly as a publish does, then
returns the plan instead of applying it. GET /catalog/compatibility returns the
same report for the catalog already installed. Both answer with a compatibility
report:

verdict is the worst class among the changes (invisible, additive, or
reinterpreting); publishable is false only when there are blockers, and each
blocker names the records it protects and the action that fixes it. A refused
publish returns 409 catalog_incompatible carrying the same report under
compatibility. See Changing definitions.
GET /catalog/prune answers the other side of the same question — what the
workspace no longer needs:
It is read-only. Every definition that is not the active choice is counted against
real records, annotations, and runs, so each candidate carries references,
reference_kind, and safe_to_delete; safe_to_delete at the top level lists the
family:name@version strings nothing references at all. An active collection
version, view, or artifact is never offered, because it is in use by definition.
Backfill: apply a processor to stored records¶
POST /backfill registers a bounded, resumable backfill and returns 202 with a
durable handle. It never overwrites an existing annotation.

GET /backfill lists recent backfills; GET /backfill/{id} returns one handle's
state, cursor_seq, scanned, annotated, and last_error;
POST /backfill/{id}/cancel stops a live backfill at its next batch boundary and
keeps every annotation already written. A second request for the same collection
version and processor returns 409 backfill_exists.
POST /derivations/{name}/rebind repoints one changes cursor after a deliberate
Source-scope change, with {"entity": "...", "policy": "reset"|"carry"}. Both
policies write a _system audit naming the old and new source hashes.
POST /reindex rebuilds external search projections for the workspace, which is
how an index adopts a newly declared field. Name exactly one scope — since_seq
to resume from a sequence, or reset: true for every ready record:

It answers with mode, target_count, and enqueued_jobs: the work is ordinary
claim-fenced projection jobs the worker drains, and stored records are never
rewritten. Naming both scopes or neither is 422 reindex_request. A reset
rebuild additionally requires confirm: true outside a test database.
Write and fetch records¶
POST /records is the atomic public write boundary. It accepts a non-empty
records array, validates each row against the selected collection contract,
and returns two partitions:
The index points back to the request array. A retry with the same
dedupe_key and identical payload appears under duplicates; a
different payload for that key returns 409 dedupe_conflict. The whole batch
commits or rolls back together. ready: false means required enrichment is
still pending, not that the record was lost.
GET /records/{id} is the full dereference endpoint when you already know a
record UUID:
Unlike the compact timeline row, this includes the collection hash, complete content, scores, annotations and metadata, provenance parents, readiness, and timestamps. It is the right endpoint for inspecting one row, not for loading an entity's complete state.
Replay consumers: /delta and /cursor¶
Use these routes when another system maintains a cache or projection and needs
every change in sequence order. Unlike /timeline, delta is
ascending, includes ready and unready rows plus tombstones, and tracks a named
consumer position:

The response contains records, next_cursor, and a 64-character
scope_hash. Advance the cursor only after the consumer has durably applied
the returned page:

The cursor is monotonic. The scope hash prevents a consumer from silently
reusing a position with different entity, collection, status, or system-row
filters. Use a new consumer name or explicit force: true when intentionally
resetting a scope.
Search, named views, and rank contracts¶
POST /search accepts the full typed SearchSpec and is the general retrieval
route:

Use GET /search?q=budget&entity=maria&collection=main&k=10 for the small
query-string convenience form. It creates a hybrid search with a standard
include list; use POST /search for filters, fields, annotations, multiple
Sources, or a custom rank expression.
Every ranked hit has a one-based rank, a query-relative score in the
closed interval 0–1, and the native rank_score used by the engine. The
response's ranking object states that the public score is min-max normalized
over the ranked candidate pool and is not calibrated. It preserves order but
is neither a probability nor comparable across queries. Structured results
have score: null and no rank_score, because order_by is not a relevance
function.
GET /views lists the compiled named views. POST /views/{name}/query supplies
only that view's typed parameters, for example:

GET /rank/schema publishes the normalized rank grammar, result-score
contract, active score/field bindings, and backend capabilities for client tooling. Search and view
responses are byte-bounded; narrow k or requested fields if they exceed the
configured response limit.
Cited synthesis: POST /answer¶
Search returns records; POST /answer returns prose. It is the one read route
that calls a model synchronously: it retrieves evidence, asks the model to
answer from that evidence alone, and rejects the response if the model cites an
id it was not shown. Use it when the caller wants an answer rather than a hit
list, and can wait a few seconds for it.

It searches every collection whose definition declares
answerable: true, and nothing else. A catalog
that declares it nowhere answers 422 answer_unavailable.

citations are the record ids the model actually leaned on — every one is
verified against the evidence it was shown, so a fabricated id fails the request
with 502 answer_citation rather than reaching the caller. input_ids is the
wider set that was visible. gaps is the model's own statement of what the
memory did not cover, which is usually the most actionable part of the response.
What it searches. Answer runs one hybrid k: 20 search across the active
collections whose catalog definitions explicitly set
answerable: true. It is not tied to
reserved collection names. When entities is present, it narrows that search
to those entities; otherwise it considers every entity in the answerable
collections. If none are declared, it returns 422 answer_unavailable.
Use a named view when your product needs a reusable, different retrieval scope or wants the record hits rather than server-generated prose.
save: true writes the synthesis as one keyed record — collection
syntheses, entity answer, type synthesis, key answer:<sha256 of the
question and window> — citing the same records the answer cited. Re-asking an
identical question therefore supersedes the previous synthesis instead of piling
up duplicates. The catalog must define a syntheses collection; the shipped
catalog does not, but examples/gbrain_catalog/ does. The MCP answer tool
always forces save: false.
The route runs on a fixed internal budget (one task, 2 model calls, 4 with
rewrite, and at most 150 seconds) clamped by the deployment's run limits, so it
cannot outgrow a request timeout.
It needs a real provider. Search, views, and artifact renders are
deterministic and work fine under LLM_FAKE=1; answer does not — the
deterministic fake provider cannot satisfy the answer schema, so a faked
deployment returns 502 answer_model. When debugging "the agent found nothing",
confirm reachability with a search tool first, then answer.

Derivation jobs and run audit¶
POST /processors/{name}/run is the manual enqueue route for a derivation.
The path uses the older word processors, but it accepts only a derivation
name—not an enrichment processor such as importance or embedding_v1. It
does not call a model inline:

The response includes job_id, enqueued, coalesced, and run_after. The
worker later claims the job, performs the bounded workflow, validates
citations, and commits the emitted records. GET /jobs/{id} reports state, attempts,
lease/error details, and completion; POST /jobs/{id}/retry requeues a dead
job when retry policy allows it.
GET /runs lists compact, newest-first audit summaries. Filter with
entity, processor, operation, source, status, limit, and
before_seq:

Summaries report the friendly source_kind (changes or snapshot); private
checkpoint and transition fields appear only in the detailed run audit.
GET /runs/{id} expands one run and returns its ordered emitted records. Use
output_offset and output_limit to page large sets. The run audit retains
the exact definition/config hashes and the runtime's internal read receipt and
normalized emission manifest (basis and candidate_set in the payload),
including expected active heads, inferred effect/coverage, keyed divergence,
visible sources, citations, output IDs, status, and failure classification. It
does not expose prompts or model responses.
Prompt-ready context assembly¶
GET /context is a convenience assembler for applications that need one
bounded prompt input rather than separate document and search calls:

It gathers current keyed state, task search results, recent records, and—when
consumer is supplied—delta records. It deduplicates record IDs, allocates
bounded section shares, and returns components, input_record_ids,
rendered text, tokens, and truncated. It does not advance the consumer
cursor; use /cursor after independently processing delta output.
rendered rows are always escaped, and by default nothing else: the endpoint
adds no element and no explanatory sentence, so you compose the prompt around
the rows yourself. When you would rather it do the wrapping, ask for it —
fence_tag names the element and optional fence_preamble is the sentence
above it, both charged against budget:

Catalog and tool discovery¶
These read-only routes let clients discover the selected contract instead of hard-coding it:

/collections, /processors, and /triggers expose safe normalized summaries,
bindings, and semantic hashes. Derivation summaries show source, task id/use,
limits, and emission intent without task configuration or prompt templates.
/tools exposes only the selected package's explicit MCP allowlist, not every
loaded route, view, or artifact. Its protocol, package/interface/catalog
hashes, exact bindings, and Draft 2020-12 input/output schemas let the HTTP MCP
server, stdio adapter, or another agent harness discover the contract without reading YAML. A
package without an mcp: binding returns an empty tool list. /artifacts
still lists the loaded artifact definitions independently.
The API serves the declared tools directly over authenticated Streamable HTTP:
For a local host that needs stdio, run the adapter with the workspace API URL and key:
Use uv run memseek mcp --check first to authenticate, identify the selected
package/interface, list the exposed tools, and report the MCP revisions
supported by the installed SDK without opening an MCP protocol connection.
The adapter invokes existing routes only: answer, record, exact named
views, and exact artifact renders. It never creates a per-view or per-artifact
HTTP endpoint; MCP answer always forces save: false.

Artifacts, snapshots, and promotion¶
Artifacts turn current records and views into bounded application-facing outputs. A live render does not require an LLM:

POST /artifacts/{name}/snapshot persists the rendered result as a
provenance-carrying snapshot. GET /artifacts/{name} reads the current
materialized snapshot using its query parameters. Reviewed artifacts remain
draft state until explicitly approved:

Approval writes an audited successor record; it never modifies the original draft
or claim that the proposal is better without an external review decision. A
reviewed derivation declares emit.complete: true and emit.review: required;
every emitted record must be draft and its keys must match the persisted
manifest. Approval is idempotent after success. On the first attempt it
verifies each touched active head against the run's captured read receipt and
returns 409 promotion_stale without writes if live state changed in the
meantime.
Artifact uses and feedback¶
POST /artifacts/{name}/uses renders an artifact and registers the small
handle a later outcome can name. It returns the render, an opaque use ID, the
resolved learning target, and an OpenTelemetry-safe attribute map:

snapshot: true also persists the render as a record and requires the artifact
to declare a snapshot: target.

content is the ordinary artifact render, so request parameters and record text
arrive escaped and wrapped in whatever elements the artifact's own template
declares, exactly as they do from /render — a bind adds correlation, it does
not change rendering.
learning_target is null when the artifact declares no learning: block or
when its target block read no active head. render.truncated is worth checking:
a block that silently hit its token budget is a distinct failure mode from a bad
skill rule.
The application stores that id beside its own result and returns it with the
outcome. POST /artifact-uses/{id}/feedback creates one ordinary
learning_signals record; it never updates an artifact directly:

kind is one of thumbs_up, thumbs_down, correction, task_success,
task_failure, exception, evaluation; source is one of end_user,
operator, evaluator, application. Optional members are score (0–1),
label, comment, expected, actual_excerpt, dedupe_key, and up to eight
informational execution_refs. The response reports the created record and
whether the submission was a dedupe replay:

GET /artifact-uses/{id} returns that use metadata for debugging and support —
identities, hashes, learning target, expiry, and an expired flag — never a
render, never a prompt, never an external trace. A use belonging to another
workspace is indistinguishable from one that does not exist, and a use ID is not
a credential: feedback still requires normal workspace authentication.

Provenance-aware erasure¶
POST /erase is the genuinely destructive operation. Choose exactly one
selector: an entire entity or explicit record UUIDs:

The response reports the hash-only erasure audit ID, deleted count, affected entity count, and an external-index delete job ID. Erasure expands the bounded set of dependent records, holds off active derivation work, removes the records, refreshes keyed predecessors, and lets the worker drain projection deletes. It is not a soft-delete operation and cannot be undone through the API.

This directory lists every public route in one place. Every route except
GET /health requires the workspace bearer token. Timeline, history, delta,
search, and run output are paginated; document and context responses are
bounded snapshots.
